Join a Real Protest against development in the Transkei

Join a Real Protest against development in the Transkei: it’s all fair and well to be anti-Shell, Total etc… and attend a protest. But driving to and from the protest in your petrol-powered motor car makes you nothing more than a bigot.

It is gonna take radical fundamental shifts in thinking, and then behaviours, to reverse the damage that we are busy doing to the earth.

Like changing your transportation mode for one. And understanding whose lives you are driving through.

Donkey Cart

Brucifire.co.za Donkey-Cart-Mission

Introducing a serious alternative off-roading machine. The best fur by fur by far. This thing can go anywhere. It has space up front for two donkeys for when the going gets tough and we need low-range!

The donkeys swap out too! And they hardly cost much to buy in the first place. You can get yourself a healthy secondhand model for a case of the right beer.

And there are filling stations that give FREE fuel all along the way. With incredible views and fantastic conversations as we stop and go our way across the hills. Of our own accord. No roadworks or potholes will slow us down.

We are going to be going slow for sure – but all the better for seeing life go by in the Transkei.

It has brakes and suspension. And it’s huge compared to a normal old diesel bakkie. Roofed the whole way!

There is no engine wasting space and fuel. And emitting gas fumes.

Crew

Brucifire (surf filmmaker), Mannie-Michel Joeireiro (Karate champion) and Xonalanga (Fishing Guide). With special guests joining us along the way.

Development in the Transkei

Development is ruining the serenity and sacredness of the land. It destroys local culture and values in place of Westernised living and greed.

Already there have been murders. And factions within communities allow themselves to be torn apart by the corporate invaders using all kinds of promises. The Australian miners trying to dredge up Xolobane left directly due to the killing I suppose. But who has taken their place in Montashe’s little evil black book? The Ocean Economy as referred to by Squirrel, means the mining of coastal resources. Giving away fishing rights. And allowing the ANC to further rob and steal the South African people’s money.

The Bridges

Unbelievably, in the midst of all the ANC corruption turmoil, we have two mammoth bridges currently being built in the middle of the most beautiful part of the Transkei. A bridge over the Mtentu River gorge. And another over the Msikaba.

R8 Billion of R40 Billion allocated has been spent already. The bridges are nowhere if anywhere. Way behind schedule.

But it’s the motivation for these bridges that begs to be analysed. For the R40 Billion, Sanral will have saved exactly 69 km between Durban and East London. This is paltry and pathetic. Plus, the proposed roads to the bridges, do not even exist yet?!

At R20 000 000 per kilometre, the remaining budget has enough. But does the government really have the money for this? They cannot even fix the potholes in our current road infrastructure, let alone maintain a whole new road.

But the glaring problem is that they want to route the new road right through the special bio-diversity region that is Mkambati and surrounds. Opening up the vitally important bio-diversity zone to new developments. Already corporates are taking advantage.

And guess what lies just close by the proposed new road? Titanium. The same stuff people are murdered for. Which happened in Xolobane. “Bazooka” Rhadebe was murdered as he led an opposition group from the community, against the people who wanted to ruin the peace and quiet of the land. Was he murdered by the Australians? Or by his people? You can read the Daily Maverick’s most recent take on the sordid situation right HERE.

For this is the problem with development. Greedy people see money and cars in the future. Content people see problems and crime. Most people in the Transkei are content. But it’s that greedy minority that we need to watch out for.

Our Protest Project

Is to ride through the Transkei on our fur by fur donket cart. Alternative transportation is the theme here. We are going to roll out of Centane, where the wagon is being prepared. And then meander past many historical sites. And historical people too! On our way to the beach at Mbolompo. Where we are going to study the ancient walls that have been lying there unexplained for thousands of years.

Mannie, who lives in the Transkei, has already plotted and planned the route we are going to take.

It’s camping all the way. And we won’t be travelling every day. We are seeking to talk with locals and understand their true requirements as people living in the beautiful Transkei. Do they want Western influence? Do they want cars and malls? This is what we aim to find out.
