Which DOG don’t you GET? Part 5 of the Mama Oyster Catcher saga: you can catch up to the present by clicking through the past links below. They document the ongoing saga since Bruce discovered a nesting mama Oyster Catcher – being disturbed by the purveyors of a new boardwalk down the beach in *Jeffreys Bay.

This led to even more unwanted interactions as the ignorant public merrily blew right past the sensitive situation.

With their dogs nogal!

Part 1 – eggs NOT for breakfast

Part 2 – plight of the Oyster Catcher family

Part 3 – Mama Oyster Catcher prevails

Part 4 – baby Oyster Catchers have hatched

*This is way down the beach, not SuperTubes as we incorrectly reported initially.

And is hopefully going to help with the eternal free dog problem. That plagues places like The Point and Supertubes. Where dogs are NOT allowed off their LEASHES.

FREE Dogs

Well, in as much as we all hate standing in dog shit, the real reason we need dogs on leashes, or rather, dogs at Dog Beach down the way, is to protect the mama Oyster Catcher. In her valiant bid to raise an endangered family.

She nests in the same place each year. The locals, who know, respect this part of the beach. But the ever-increasing stream of morons – who never stop coming here – and who are totally oblivious – walk right past her.

With their dogs!

Dogs are the number one threat to Oyster Catcher families. Further down in the Cape this problem has become rife too, as more and more people retire/settle at the coast. Often coming from places where the intricacies of the environment are simply ignored. Like on the Vaal River. Where they are spraying glyphosate directly into the river.

Oyster Catchers are endangered. Their numbers can be counted in the very low thousands. Why are there even dogs at the Oyster Catcher breeding beach in the first place?

There is even a policeman supposedly in charge of the situation. But we all know all about the police these days…read on.

Rogue organisations

Since the country’s law upholders have permanently gone to sleep, we have recently experienced the flourishing of rogue public organisations. Associations. Forums. That since the ANC, there is nobody to enforce any law on them whatsoever. Some of these head-heavy groups have also taken to bending environmental and other laws, to suit themselves.

There is nobody to police these associations anymore. The groups we are referring to here, are specifically the ones who concern themselves directly with affecting the environment. Nobody to check up on them. And they even get to operate in and affect estuaries. The benthic zone! Susceptible marine environments that carry multitudes of endemic and indigenous animal and plant species. That cannot survive anywhere else.

This zone is their home. Just like the mama Oyster Catcher. There is no place else for them to breed and raise families.

The Boardwalk Update

It seems that the boardwalk construction has been put on hold. As Bruce stated – “Maybe they are going to check the bird book for when breeding season ends?”.

We are going to look more into who the purveyors of this boardwalk in Jeffreys Bay are. And what the reasons and motivations were for the project. It is quite an expensive undertaking and needs to be built solid enough to withstand the wild conditions that can prevail on the beach in this place.
